SELECTING YOUR COLLIE PUP

Over the years we have had the sorry experience of responding to people who have been very disappointed that the collie they have bought has not come up to their expectations for a variety of reasons! Most commonly, complaints arise when their collie has been purchased from either a pet shop or from an un-reputable breeder! Responsible, registered breeders are answerable to not only their Canine Controlling Body, but also to their peers and the local courts.

Always ensure you begin by selecting a reputable registered breeder - one that will assist you in selecting a puppy that best suits your needs.

Some tips and facts that will help you find a perfect Collie...

Typical Vedamea Puppy The Collie is a medium-sized dog about twenty-two inches at the withers (shoulders). His crowning glory is his magnificent and easily maintained double coat. Fed on a natural diet, he will cost around a dollar a day to feed and requires the minimum of veterinary care. Naturally, like any breed of dog, a Collie loves to go out for a daily walk. However, a good size backyard with plenty of interactive play will suffice when time is short.

The Collie is a loyal and trustworthy member of the family with a unique ability to bond with children of all ages. Their friendly intelligent disposition makes them a pleasure to own and easy to train. They prefer to live indoors as part of the family, or they are just as content to sleep outdoors, preferably as close to they're master and family as possible.

The Collie's natural herding instincts make's him a reliable and protective watchdog, barking only to warn if an intruder is approaching. However, true Collie temperament renders them unsuitable as an attack dog.

Preference for gender is purely a personal choice as both males or females make equally good companions. A female has a breeding cycle approx. every 10 months, therefore de-sexing a bitch warrants serious consideration for numerous reasons including avoiding unwanted pets and saving on costly local council registrations. Another myth in relation to male dogs is that they constantly urinate on anything that is vertical! This is not true!! A male will only carry out this practice if a strange male dog invades his territory or when a female in heat is in close proximity.

WHITE - predominately white with an occasional coloured patch of the colours listed above,

                      and tan markings.

SHORT HISTORY AND ORIGIN OF THE ROUGH COLLIE

Cute Puppy While much of the early history of the Rough Collie remains shrouded in mystery, many of the features most admired in today's Collie indicates much about that history. The Rough Collie was first encountered in the harsh unyielding environment of the hilly border counties of Scotland. Although their exact heredity is lost, it is clear that they were working dogs, which were used to control and shepherd large numbers of animals. To work sheep, a reliable dog is needed; one with which the shepherd could achieve a close trust and understanding. It is evident that selective breeding was practiced to produce and maintain a reliable working dog the chief characteristics of which were courage, resourcefulness and utility. These dogs had to be actively contributing members of a working partnership as well as being hardy and quick witted to handle sheep in such harsh conditions.

In the late nineteenth century, Queen Victoria made Collies more popular by admitting one to the Royal household. No longer were Collies only working sheepdogs; they became fashionable and were appreciated for the same qualities, which made them such excellent farm dogs. Breeders now tried to improve conformation as well as temperament.

The popularity of the Rough Collie was, undoubtedly influenced by the famous Terhune Collies when they became the heroes of many stories written by their master around the 1920s. These were made into a T.V. series, winning the hearts of enchanted viewers in unnumbered thousands of households around the world.
